Barbie 2 Is Almost Inevitable After Warner Bros.’ Major Business Move

Following a new move at Warner Bros., the possibility of a Barbie 2 just went from a highly likely sequel to all but an inevitability.

This week, Noah Baumbach signed a three-year, first-look agreement for features at Warner Bros., leaving behind an exclusive pact the filmmaker and writer had with Netflix for a new deal with WB. The new deal will take effect in 2027, and feature a brand new movie by Baumbach that he is currently working, among other projects most likely.

Baumbach is behind such hit films as Marriage Story and The Squid and the Whale, and while his signing doesn’t exactly signify anything for Barbie 2, it is important for a number of reasons.

Baumbach’s deal with WB makes a Barbie 2 much more likely

For starters, Baumbach was behind a part of Barbie. While his wife, filmmaker Greta Gerwig, directed the film, it was co-written by the married couple. While looking at something as simple as a couple’s marriage isn’t always the best indicator, it does seem to be a great trend when it comes to Baumbach and Gerwig.

The pair, who married in 2023 after being together for 12 years, have worked closely together throughout their career. Gerwig has starred in a number of movies that Baumbach has directed, including Baumbach’s 2022 Netflix movie White Noise. The pair have also written together on several occasions, and in a likely not-so-coincidental move, Gerwig also sparked up a relationship with Netflix following Baumbach’s move there, which will see Gerwig release a brand new Narnia movie for the streamer.

Of course, much of this is speculation as of now. The fact that Baumbach has a working relationship doesn’t necessarily mean a Barbie 2 is coming. However, now that he’s free to work with the company again, and the fact that the first Barbie movie was a massive success, earning over $1.4 billion at the box office, it seems like the path to a sequel just got a lot easier.
