Suicide Squad’s David Ayer Explains Real-Life Danger Brad Pitt Faced When Filming New Dog Movie

Suicide Squad director David Ayer has recently revealed how Brad Pitt faced harsh conditions while filming their upcoming survival thriller. Instead of keeping the production in warm studios, Ayer wanted Pitt to experience the cold and harsh conditions his character faces throughout the story.

In a behind-the-scenes featurette of Heart of the Beast, the director explained that the production focused on making the survival scenes feel as realistic as possible.

“This wasn’t about hanging out in the trailer and being warm,” Ayer said in the recent one-minute, 18-second-long clip. “It’s about being cold and miserable on set every day.”

Pitt also underwent wilderness training with Leaf Swenson, a former SERE instructor who has trained military personnel for survival situations. The training covered practical skills such as starting fires in wet conditions and navigating dangerous rivers.

Ayer added, “He’s a SERE school instructor. He trains pilots and military personnel on how to survive in these real situations. An absolute cornucopia of survival knowledge.
How do you start a fire in the rain with no matches? How you survive going downriver bouncing off rocks?
There’s a technique to all of this.”

Ayer said the preparation was important because he wanted the survival techniques shown in the movie to be accurate. “The physical struggles we see are real,” the director explained. “He’s living, he’s experiencing this.”

Brad Pitt and his canine co-star face a brutal fight for survival in the Alaskan wilderness

Heart of the Beast follows Special Forces officer James Belmont, played by Pitt, after a plane crash leaves him stranded deep in the Alaskan wilderness. Belmont is injured and far from civilization, with his military combat dog, Odin (a German Shepherd named Uber), as his only companion.

The pair must find their way through dangerous terrain while dealing with freezing temperatures, powerful river rapids, and wild animals. Their journey tests Belmont’s survival skills and the bond between a soldier and his canine/K9 partner.

The movie was written by Cameron Alexander, with Damien Chazelle attached as an executive producer. J.K. Simmons and Anna Lambe also star alongside Pitt.

The director previously worked with Pitt on Fury and has also directed movies including Suicide Squad and The Beekeeper.

Paramount Pictures is set to release the movie exclusively in theaters, Dolby Cinema, and 4DX on September 25, 2026.
