The Thomas Crown Affair: Michael B. Jordan Has Good Reason for Changing the Source Material

Michael B. Jordan is giving The Thomas Crown Affair a major change by reworking the motivation of its famous gentleman thief. Instead of making Crown a wealthy man who steals valuable art simply for excitement, Jordan wants the new version to give the character a stronger reason for his actions.

Speaking to Vogue for its October issue, the 39-year-old explained that the original idea of a rich man committing crimes for fun may not connect with modern audiences. 

He said, “I don’t think a billionaire, or a millionaire, just doing shit for fun, right now, is something that people want to see.” Jordan described his version of Crown as someone with a clear personal mission behind his crimes. 

The character will still operate outside the law, but his actions will have a deeper purpose in the heist movie.

What else do we know about Michael B. Jordan’s The Thomas Crown Affair remake?

The Thomas Crown Affair comes from Amazon MGM Studios and will be the third major film version of the story. Norman Jewison directed the 1968 original, while John McTiernan directed the 1999 remake starring Pierce Brosnan and Rene Russo.

Michael B. Jordan is taking on several major roles in the new heist movie. He will star as Thomas Crown, direct the film, and produce it through his Outlier Society banner. 

The project follows Jordan’s directorial debut with Creed III, which became a major box-office success. Drew Pearce and Jason Hall have written the screenplay. Adria Arjona will star opposite Jordan, with Kenneth Branagh, Lily Gladstone, Danai Gurira, and Pilou Asbæk also joining the cast. 

Additionally, Oscar-winning musician Jon Batiste will create the score, while Bradford Young serves as cinematographer. The film is also set to arrive before Jordan takes an extended break from acting. 

Michael B. Jordan has said he plans to step away from the industry for much of 2027 after completing his current promotional commitments.

The Thomas Crown Affair is scheduled to open in theaters and IMAX on March 5, 2027.
