Paramount’s Threat to Leave California Gets Confusing Update as Important Date Passes
Paramount‘s recent threats about leaving California have taken an unexpected twist. Following the passage of an important date, the situation involving Paramount’s relocation has now gotten even more complicated.
According to the latest turn of events, internal discussions within the California Attorney General’s office and the Los Angeles Mayor’s office had the information that Paramount would be leaving the state. But per a report from TMZ, sources have confirmed that both the Mayor and Attorney General knew that the announcement would be made yesterday.
Surprisingly, the much-awaited announcement never came, as the scheduled deadline has now expired. As of now, there are no concrete updates as to what exactly happened. Whether there was a change in the ongoing circumstances or this was just an act of delay from Paramount is unknown, per TMZ.
The merger lawsuit at the center of Paramount’s relocation threat
California Attorney General Rob Bonta, along with 11 other state attorneys general, has sued to stop Paramount from buying Warner Bros. Discovery. The antitrust lawsuit was filed to block the $110 billion merger as it would combine two of Hollywood’s five legacy studios (including CBS, HBO Max, and CNN). This, in turn, might result in them controlling over 25% of major film releases, which might lead to higher prices and reduced competition.
David Ellison, Paramount’s CEO, reportedly said that if Rob Bonta did not agree to the settlement over the Warner Bros. merger, Paramount could move its studio operations from California to other states, including Texas, Tennessee, or Georgia. While negotiations from both sides have been ongoing for several months, no conclusion has been reached.
Bonta hints that Paramount was being unreasonable during the negotiations. Ellison, on the other hand, has set a deadline of October 1, 2026, mentioning that if both parties do not come to an agreement by then, Paramount could leave California.
