Dwayne Johnson Details Massive Weight Loss for Bizarre New Benny Safdie Movie
Dwayne Johnson has shared details of a major weight-loss transition that he recently underwent. The WWE star has lost a significant amount of weight for an upcoming Benny Safdie movie. In a recent Instagram video, he noted that he has lost almost 50 pounds for Lizard Music.
Previously portraying MMA legend Mark Kerr in The Smashing Machine (also directed by Safdie), Johnson weighed around 282 lbs. But now, as ‘The Rock’ will reportedly play a 70-year-old man in Lizard Music, a significant weight drop was required.
Sharing his journey, Johnson captured the post, “Thanks for all the cool questions lately about my training/diet/conditioning and why I slimmed down for my current role I’m filming now (Benny Safdie’sLizard Music). I took almost a year to lose approximately 50lbs – from stepping on set to film ‘The Smashing Machine’ weighing 282lbs, to my current weight today – 235lbs.”
The Moana star further added, “Last time I was this weight, was my freshman football season at University of Miami. I was a little “light in the a**”, for a defensively tackle, but still a monster.”
What else do we know about Benny Safdie’s Lizard Music with Dwayne Johnson?
Benny Safdie’s Lizard Music is about a lonely boy who accidentally discovers something strange. The boy gets hold of a secret late-night TV/radio broadcast showing lizards playing unusual music. Left curious by the discovery, he starts looking for answers, which leads him to an eccentric character from the 70s, Chicken Man, played by Johnson.
Chicken Man has a very old pet chicken named Claudia, who is 111 years old. The boy, along with the Chicken Man character and his pet chicken, goes on an adventure to find a secret society. However, their journey soon unfolds into something bigger. Lizard Music is based on a book by Daniel M. Pinkwater under the same title.
Alongside Dwayne Johnson, the film’s cast includes Alicia Silverstone, Regina Hall, Tim Heidecker, and others. Johnson is also producing the project with Safdie. David Koplan, Nick Nesbitt, and Scott Stubers are also contributing as producers for Lizard Music.
Amazon MGM Studios’ Head of Film, Streaming and Theatrical, Courtenay Valenti reflected on the upcoming project and said, per Deadline, “We are so thrilled to partner once again with extraordinarily talented Dwayne Johnson, as well as work for the first time with the amazing creator, writer and director Benny Safdie, on Lizard Music. Everyone at Amazon MGM and UA is deeply inspired by their previous collaboration on the critically acclaimed The Smashing Machine.”
