Ryan Coogler Reveals the Problem Michael B. Jordan’s Killmonger Created in Black Panther
Michael B. Jordan‘s Killmonger is one of the most celebrated MCU villains. However, Ryan Coogler revealed that crafting the villain was made difficult due to one of Jordan’s attributes.
The Black Panther director, in conversation with Vogue, revealed that Jordan’s natural charisma made crafting villains like Killmonger difficult. That said, it’s something Coogler has remained mindful of since the beginning of his collaboration with the Creed actor. He said, with reference to Killmonger, “We’ve got to believe that he can take down all of Wakanda, that he’s capable of harming our heroes. That’s even harder to do when you have that charisma.”
Michael B. Jordan’s Killmonger brought more complexity to Black Panther
Killmonger’s presence made Black Panther a far more complex film than it could have been. Coogler revealed that Michael B. Jordan’s character elevated the film’s main conflict beyond a simple good-versus-evil narrative. In the movie, King T’Challa’s long-lost cousin comes from the perspective of a Black man who never had protection or access to Wakanda. His motivation in the film was to exploit his birthright, through his father’s Wakandan status, to use the weaponry of Wakanda to wage war on those who had exploited his ancestors.
What proved difficult here, with the charisma that he had, was to keep the character as a believable antagonist, someone whom the heroes cannot reason with. While the way in which he carried out his vision was objectively wrong, his grievances with Wakanda and the rest of the world were legitimate, to the point where Chadwick Boseman’s T’Challa took his words to heart but created a safer dialogue with the outside world.
Killmonger remains one of the more celebrated villains alongside Hela from Thor: Ragnarok and Thanos from Avengers: Infinity War. The character is among the frontrunners among fans when it comes to villains they want to see return ot the MCU in future projects.
