Clayface MPA Rating Teases Brutal DCU Movie With Gore, Nudity, Drugs, & More
Clayface is bringing body horror to the new DC Universe. The film stars Tom Rhys Harries as Matt Hagen, an actor who undergoes a mysterious transformation. James Watkins directs the film from a screenplay by Mike Flanagan and Hossein Amini. Warner Bros. Pictures will release Clayface in theaters on October 23, 2026.
The Motion Picture Association has now given Clayface an R rating. According to the official MPA listing, the rating comes from strong bloody violence, gore, language, some nudity, and brief drug use. The classification offers a clearer idea of the mature content audiences can expect from the upcoming DC Studios film, given it is DCU’s first theatrical R-rated entry.
What the Clayface rating tells us about DC Studios’ darker approach
The R rating further establishes Clayface as a gore-focused film. The MPA specifically cites strong bloody violence and gore, suggesting that the film will not shy away from graphic imagery as Matt Hagen transforms into his new self. The mention of nudity and brief drug use also shows that its mature content extends beyond the violence.
Clayface will be the third theatrical film in James Gunn’s DC Universe, following Superman and Supergirl. However, Harries and Watkins have emphasized that the film remains “fairly self-contained” despite its place in the shared universe. In an interview with PEOPLE, Watkins said, “We’re a smaller-budgeted movie, but we’re also leaning into that notion of being a big, bold swing in a horror space.”
That approach fits the story of Matt Hagen getting an experimental treatment after suffering a serious injury. The procedure initially offers him a way to restore his appearance and career, but it ultimately leads to disturbing physical changes. His transformation forms the central horror element of the film.
Watkins’ past work also fits the film’s horror style. He previously directed Speak No Evil, which featured dark and unsettling themes. With Clayface, he is bringing that horror experience to a DC film with a more contained story.
With its R rating now confirmed, Clayface is taking the DC Universe further into mature territory. The film will arrive in theaters on October 23, 2026.
