Avengers: Doomsday’s Alan Cumming Reveals Big Change to X-Men’s Nightcrawler’s Look
Alan Cumming’s beloved X-Men character Nightcrawler is getting a makeover in Avengers: Doomsday. The actor will reprise the role after almost two dozen years in the upcoming ensemble. While the X-Men’s roles are being kept under wraps, Cumming has started to tease what fans can expect from the teleporting mutant.
During an appearance on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, Cumming spoke about how Nightcrawler has changed since his last appearance.
“That’s me in the old one,” he said, pointing to a photo of Nightcrawler in X2. “I’m different now. That’s the concession to me being older. They gave me grey hair. Oh yes, he’s a grey-haired superhero.”

Nightcrawler’s new look also includes a new costume, which includes two swords as well. Cumming joins a long list of actors who are reprising their Marvel superhero roles in the new film. Avengers: Doomsday will follow the titular heroes as they unite forces with the Fantastic Four and even face off against the X-Men.
It’s unclear whether Cumming’s Nightcrawler and the other mutants are the same versions as the ones portrayed in 20th Century Fox’s X-Men trilogy.
The upcoming film brings back Patrick Stewart’s Professor X, Ian McKellen’s Magneto, Rebecca Romijn’s Mystique, and Channing Tatum’s Gambit. It remains to be seen whether the film will acknowledge Nightcrawler to be Mystique’s son, following in the wake of the comic books.
Nightcrawler has become an important part of the X-Men in recent years. Following Cumming, a younger version of the character was played by Kodi Smit-McPhee. Nightcrawler has also been the subject of a controversial decision in X-Men ’97. Marvel Studios has yet to officially show Nightcrawler in the promotional marketing material for the film.
Avengers: Doomsday is scheduled for theatrical release on December 18, 2026.
