Catch Johnny Depp’s Unrecognizable Role in $474M Epic Before It Leaves Streaming

Johnny Depp‘s memorable turn as Willy Wonka in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory will be leaving Netflix’s library next month. The musical fantasy movie from director Tim Burton, with whom Depp has maintained a long-lasting working relationship, was a box-office success on release and received strong reviews from critics.

According to a report by What’s On Netflix, Tim Burton’s 2005 movie Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is set to leave Netflix on October 1.

Alongside Depp, the movie also stars Helena Bonham Carter, Freddie Highmore, and Christopher Lee. The Pirates of the Caribbean actor was praised by many critics for his performance as Willy Wonka, which also earned him a Golden Globe nomination.

Made on a reported budget of $150 million, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory opened with $56 million at the domestic box office. It went on to earn around $206 million domestically and $268 million internationally. This brought the movie’s lifetime total to over $474 million, making it the eighth-highest-grossing film of the year (via Box Office Mojo).

Along with its box-office success, the movie received critical acclaim for its interpretation of author Roald Dahl’s original book. On Rotten Tomatoes, the movie earned an 83 percent Tomatometer score based on reviews from critics. Critic Stephanie Zacharek concluded in her review of the film for Salon that, “As jaggedly problematic as it is, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory couldn’t have emerged from anywhere but the dark, chambered nautilus of Burton’s imagination — in its best sections, it’s magically deranged in a way no other filmmaker could even come close to pulling off.”

According to a report by Collider, in August, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory made the list of the ten most-streamed movies in the world on the streaming platform.
