Weapons: Zach Cregger’s Gladys Prequel Gets Devastating News

Fans hoping to see Aunt Gladys back on the big screen sooner rather than later will have to wait. Zach Cregger‘s planned Weapons prequel, centered on the breakout witchy character, remains stuck in development limbo, and the director isn’t offering much reassurance about when that will change.

Weapons’ Gladys prequel is still far from release

Zach Cregger told Variety that he will probably start working on the Gladys movie after The Flood, his upcoming deep-space thriller. He described the Weapons prequel as complicated, citing “a lot of moving parts,” and admitted he does not know when production will move forward. The director also shrugged off reports that celebrities are campaigning for roles in it. Cregger said he probably would not even hear about such pitches, adding that “it’s not time yet” for that stage of the Weapons prequel.

Warner Bros. has already dated The Flood for August 11, 2028. Steven Spielberg’s Amblin Entertainment produces the film, which reunites Cregger with New Line Cinema and Warner Bros. after Weapons.

Gladys currently holds a September 8, 2028 release date, just one month after The Flood. Amy Madigan returns as the title character after winning the Best Supporting Actress Oscar for Weapons. Zach Shields co-writes the script.

However, Zach Cregger gave a brighter update over the summer at San Diego Comic-Con’s Directors on Directing panel. He confirmed that writing on Gladys was underway and called the story compelling. He explained that Weapons deliberately kept Gladys mysterious. Still, the Weapons prequel will explore “where Gladys comes from and how she became what we know her as” (via The Hollywood Reporter).

The director promised twists and mysteries matching the original’s tone. Weapons became a worldwide sensation last August, with a cast that included Julia Garner, Josh Brolin, Alden Ehrenreich, Austin Abrams, and Benedict Wong. For now, the Gladys movie remains in the script stage. Fans waiting on the Weapons prequel should temper expectations until Cregger finishes The Flood first.
