Zach Cregger’s Answer About Another Resident Evil Movie Isn’t Surprising at All
Zach Cregger just dropped hints about a second Resident Evil movie and revealed where things stand with his next two projects. The director shared his thoughts on returning to Raccoon City while updating fans on The Flood and the Weapons prequel.

In a Variety interview posted on X (formerly Twitter), Zach Cregger addressed the possibility of a second Resident Evil movie. “There’s always ideas,” he said. “You cannot not have ideas.” He did not confirm any formal development on a sequel.
Cregger previously shared more detailed thoughts with The Playlist. “I can’t help thinking about other places this story could go,” he said. “I’ve got ideas, but this movie hasn’t even come out yet. Let’s see what happens.”
Cregger’s Resident Evil releases on September 18, 2026, through Sony Pictures. The film follows Bryan, a medical courier navigating a viral outbreak in Raccoon City. Austin Abrams stars alongside Zach Cherry, Kali Reis, and Paul Walter Hauser. The film does not feature any established characters from the video game franchise.
Cregger also told The Playlist he sees sequel potential differently than with Barbarian. “With Barbarian, I’ve never entertained the idea of a sequel,” he said. “But this is different. I want to talk about the ending of this movie so badly.”
In the aforementioned Variety interview, Cregger shared updates on his other projects. He confirmed he is in soft prep for his sci-fi thriller The Flood. “We’ll start hard prep in the new year,” he said, adding he hopes to shoot next summer. He remained less certain about the Weapons prequel, the Aunt Gladys movie. “There’s a lot of moving parts with the Gladys thing,” Cregger said. “I don’t know yet.”
Early predictions reportedly suggest Resident Evil could earn $40 million to $50 million during its opening weekend. That figure would potentially make it the most successful opening in the franchise’s history. The film premieres at the 21st Fantastic Fest on September 17 before its wide theatrical release.
