David Corenswet Sees a Surprising Superman Parallel in Mr. Irrelevant

David Corenswet drew a direct parallel between Superman and John Tuggle in a new Entertainment Tonight interview. The actor stars as Tuggle in Mr. Irrelevant, arriving in theaters on Christmas Day 2026. He acknowledged the interesting connection between both characters he has now portrayed on screen.

“There are some interesting parallels with the character of Superman,” Corenswet told ET. He then added, “Both sides of the extremes.” Despite occupying opposite ends of the spectrum, both figures share core qualities. “They’re both good people who ultimately want to do a good job,” the actor explained. He further described them as “decent men” at their core.

Tuggle was the last pick of the 1983 NFL Draft, earning the “Mr. Irrelevant” title. He became the first player with that distinction to make his drafting team’s roster. The New York Giants fullback continued training and playing despite a rare cancer diagnosis. His grit allowed him one season with the Giants before his death in 1986.

Superman, by contrast, stands as the most powerful figure in the DC Universe. Yet Corenswet found that both roles centered on characters defined by perseverance and goodness. The actor recently wrapped filming on Man of Tomorrow, his Superman sequel releasing in July 2027.

Jonathan Levine directs Mr. Irrelevant, with Isabel May and Michael Shannon rounding out the cast. Shannon portrays legendary Giants head coach Bill Parcells in the biographical sports drama. Paramount Pictures is distributing the film, which Skydance Sports produced.

Principal photography took place in Victoria, Australia, using Melbourne and Geelong locations as stand-ins. The production created 825 jobs and contributed around $29 million to the local economy. Corenswet trained with a middle-school football coach to prepare for the physically demanding role.
