Digger Director Reveals Nearly Impossible Scene to Film That Tom Cruise Couldn’t Mess Up

There was zero room for error on this Digger scene. The director got candid about the nearly impossible sequence that Tom Cruise couldn’t mess up. According to director Alejandro G. Iñárritu, there’s one scene in this upcoming film so central to Cruise’s performance that if he had messed up, everything else would have collapsed along with him.

As Iñárritu shared with Zach Baron of GQ, “In Digger, we have this scene, he was not risking his life, but there was this ballet, right? Painters have paintings, musicians have their compositions, but in cinema, you have architecture, space, lighting, dialogue, drama, dance, all this shit. Tom is driving the whole dance, and if Tom fails, everything collapses, right? He’s the sun of these satellites.”

This scene also included Sandra Hüller, Jesse Plemons, and Riz Ahmed, along with 300 extras. Iñárritu continued, “There’s a long scene that we have been planning for months with a lot of ideas, a lot of dialogue, a lot of fun, a lot of sh-t, and every second counts. And you are in the f—ing crane, and if something fails, one word, one hesitation, one stutter, it’s f—ed.”

Iñárritu recalls then giving Cruise seven notes, remembering how the actor gave him a superintense look in return. “Then his eyes were, like, taking pictures, I think. Click-click-click. And then he said, ‘Yes, I got it.’ ‘Are you sure?’ ‘I got it.’ ‘F—ing camera!’ And then, ‘Take!'”

When Cruise stepped on set to perform, Iñárritu was as tensed as Christopher McQuarrie (director of the Mission: Impossible saga), hoping the actor didn’t mess up. But as he hit every note, the filmmaker just found himself saying, “How the f—ing hell is this guy able to understand the physicality, the spaces, the silence, the shout, the aggressivity, the vulnerability, the dance with the camera, and knowing every bit?”

What is Tom Cruise’s Digger movie about?

Digger is an upcoming black comedy about the most powerful man in the world, racing to prove himself humanity’s savior before the disaster he unleashed destroys everything. In essence, it will explore the catastrophe caused by humanity itself, rather than a natural disaster.

The movie stars Cruise as Digger Rockwell, a wealthy oil tycoon; Ahmed as Ganesh, a scientist and the President’s assistant; Hüller as Emma Rockwell, Digger’s sister; John Goodman as President Compson, the dictatorial President of the United States; and Michael Stuhlbarg as the Vice President, among others.

Digger is set to be released on October 2, 2026. The world premiere will take place in London on September 22, 2026.
