Zack Snyder Has Surprising Reason Why He Hasn’t Seen James Gunn’s Superman or Supergirl

Zack Snyder has not watched James Gunn‘s Superman or Supergirl. The filmmaker recently explained why he’s steered clear of the new DCU films. Snyder discussed the subject while reflecting on Gunn’s new direction for the franchise and his own history with DC.

In an interview with Variety, Snyder revealed, “I haven’t seen the movies.” He admitted that watching them is “a little bit too personal” for him and said it is “too soon” to do so. Snyder nevertheless praised Gunn, saying, “I do like James” and that he has “an appreciation for his vision.”

Snyder previously played a major role in shaping the DCEU universe. He directed Man of Steel, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, and Zack Snyder’s Justice League.

Zack Snyder consulted James Gunn when he was working on Superman

Despite not watching Gunn’s Superman, Snyder had a conversation with the filmmaker during the film’s development. Gunn consulted him about Superman’s costume and specifically asked about the character’s underwear.

“He asked me a question about the underwear,” Snyder told Variety. He then connected the costume discussion to his 2009 superhero film Watchmen, which he described as “a superhero deconstruction film.”

The 60-year-old filmmaker explained that the underwear worn over superhero costumes originated with Victorian strongmen. According to the filmmaker, they wore flesh-colored leotards and put underwear over them because of the period’s prudish attitude toward nudity. He questioned whether the tradition still makes sense today, calling it “such a dinosaur.”

At the same time, Snyder acknowledged that the classic design could carry a different meaning. He said, “Maybe the message is that you put the underwear back on Superman because we haven’t moved on from our Victorian prudishness.” Gunn ultimately chose to keep the red trunks as part of Corenswet’s Superman costume.

Although Snyder has yet to watch the new DCU films, his comments suggest that he respects Gunn’s creative approach and maintains a friendly relationship with him.
