Tom Cruise Reveals If He Gets Scared When Doing Death-Defying Mission: Impossible Stunts

Tom Cruise recently revealed whether he fears the death-defying stunts. The 64-year-old is known for performing his own stunts in his movies, especially in the Mission: Impossible franchise. In a recent interview, the Digger star opened up about his views on death and on-screen stunts.

In the GQ interview, Cruise was asked whether he feared death, particularly with the Mission: Impossible movies. The actor said, “Do I fear death? No. I don’t. It’s not like I’m not afraid. I don’t mind the feeling. I understand life has certainties and uncertainties. And in making movies and living life, what interests me is: Let’s move the uncertainties more into the certainties, but I want to create other uncertainties, so that we’re moving forward, and it’s part of the adventure of it.”

The 64-year-old actor also revealed that he liked standing at the edge of the cliff, “physically and metaphorically.” When asked where the urge to find the cliff comes from, the actor replied, “It’s just who I am. That’s my theory.”

Moreover, the interviewer asked the Digger star whether he was afraid on-screen or off. To this, the Top Gun actor added, “I don’t know how else to say it. I’m not afraid to go, “Okay, I know this is a leap, and let’s take the jump. Let’s go.” And I try to recognize things that I don’t know, and I don’t pretend to know things that I know and things that I don’t know. So that’s how I feel about it. Are you afraid of death? Are you afraid to be afraid?”

What are some of the stunts that Tom Cruise performed in the Mission: Impossible movies?

Tom Cruise has performed some of the most daring stunts in the Mission: Impossible franchise, especially the Burj Khalifa climb in Ghost Protocol. In the action feature, Cruise climbed the outside of the world’s tallest building using thin safety wires and special gloves.

The 64-year-old’s other notable stunt is the motorcycle cliff jump. In Dead Reckoning, Cruise drove a motorcycle off a high cliff and fell 7,000 feet before deploying his parachute. Speaking of heights, in Fallout, the actor performed a high-altitude, low-opening military parachute jump from 25,000 feet. Moreover, the Top Gun star had to perform this scene multiple times to get perfect shots.

Cruise performed two famous stunts in Rogue Nation. In one scene, the actor performed an airplane hang, strapping himself to the outside of a military plane in flight. The actor also held his breath for up to six minutes inside a massive, spinning water tank. To perform the latter stunt, Cruise trained in free-diving.

Lastly, the Digger actor’s most famous stunt is the vault heist scene in the original movie. Here, the star suspended his entire body using core strength and wire, inches above a laser-filled floor.
