Kenneth Branagh & X-Men Star Face the Horrors of War in Atonement Movie Trailer

Kino Lorber has released the official trailer for the upcoming war drama, Atonement. Starring Kenneth Branagh and Logan Star Boyd Holbrook, the movie had its world premiere at the 2026 Cannes Film Festival in May before Kino Lorber acquired the distribution rights.

The 148-second trailer shows the aftermath horrors of war and how it impacts families and military personnel involved. Based on Dexter Filkins’ 2012 New Yorker article of the same name, Reed Van Dyk directed the latest Iraq War drama from a story by himself.

Making his directorial debut, Van Dyk also produced the film alongside Tim White, Trevor White, Steven Demmler, and David Wulf. Its festival run earned positive reviews, with the movie currently holding a 93% critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes.

Kenneth Branagh & Boyd Holbrook lead Atonement’s story of guilt and redemption

Holbrook stars as Lou D’Alessandro, a troubled U.S. Marine haunted by his actions in Iraq. Meanwhile, Branagh plays Michael Reid, a journalist helping the military soldier reconcile with the victim’s family.

The film’s official synopsis reads, “Displaced from their home by U.S. military action during the early days of the Iraq War, the Khachaturian family finds refuge with relatives, gathering their three generations together under one roof. But when another bombing erupts nearby, they decide to return to their home across the city. As they navigate the war-torn streets of Baghdad, the family is trapped in a firefight between U.S. Marines and insurgents, and one Marine’s split-second decision devastates the family. Years later, haunted by his time in Iraq and aided by a New Yorker journalist, the Marine seeks to reconcile with the Khachaturian matriarch and her surviving family members.”

Branagh and Holbrook are joined by Hiam Abbass, Gheed, Yara Bakri, and Kalama Epstein among others.

Atonement is scheduled to hit U.S. theaters on October 2, 2026. Before this, the film will be screened at the Toronto International Film Festival.
