Dakota Fanning Says Her Small Twilight Role Had One Huge Advantage
Dakota Fanning revealed the one major perk of playing a smaller role in one of Hollywood’s biggest franchises. The actress explained why her Twilight experience turned out to be ideal compared to her co-stars’ journey.
Playing Jane let Dakota Fanning enjoy Twilight fandom without its biggest pressures
Dakota Fanning revealed on the Happy Sad Confused podcast that her Twilight role gave her unique advantages. She portrayed Volturi vampire Jane across three installments of the blockbuster franchise. Her supporting part let her savor the phenomenon without shouldering its immense weight.
The actress shared how massive the franchise felt when she joined the cast. “It was a huge deal. It was like all anyone was talking about,” she said. Fanning attended a regular high school at the time where “everyone was obsessed.” She also noted that she never tried out for Bella Swan. She was “just a bit young for it” when casting took place.
Furthermore, Fanning observed that the original leads never anticipated Twilight’s explosive cultural impact. “They thought they did some little vampire movie,” she said of Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart and Taylor Lautner. She also recalled arriving at Comic-Con and facing the fan frenzy as “super intense.” Still, her recurring but limited screen time kept her away from the spotlight’s harshest glare.
As a result, “Getting to be a part of that … I got like, kind of just all the good parts of it,” Fanning shared. She characterized Jane as “just a little character that was popped in, popped out, popped in, popped out.” Additionally, Fanning recognized that she “didn’t have really any of the pressure” placed on the franchise’s stars. “I just got the kind of fun experience. So, it was like ideal, you know?” she added.
Beyond the professional perks, playing Jane also forged a meaningful personal bond for the actress. “Getting to play Jane was amazing and it’s where I met Kristen, who you know is one of my closest friends,” she said. Meanwhile, the Twilight saga collectively grossed over $3.3 billion at the worldwide box office. An animated Twilight series is now in development at Netflix, adapted from Stephenie Meyer’s companion novel Midnight Sun.
