Ghost Rider Release Date Revives an MCU Strategy Marvel Abandoned After 2025

Marvel’s secret weapon is back, and 2028 is about to look very different. Ghost Rider’s newly confirmed release date quietly signals the return of a proven MCU strategy the studio stepped away from after 2025.

Ghost Rider’s release date officially brings back a familiar Marvel strategy

Marvel Studios has officially set Ghost Rider for a July 28, 2028, theatrical release, slotting it alongside X-Men on May 5 and Black Panther 3 on December 15. The updated schedule emerged from this weekend’s D23 event in Anaheim, with The Hollywood Reporter’s Borys Kit confirming all three dates. This lineup restores Marvel’s proven strategy of releasing three films per year.

That three-movie approach became Marvel’s standard model starting in 2017, following Doctor Strange as a standalone 2016 release. Recent years saw a significant pullback, however, with only one MCU film arriving in 2024. The combined 2026 and 2027 slate will also total just three movies across both years.

Deadpool and Wolverine director Shawn Levy helms Ghost Rider, with Ryan Gosling starring as the Spirit of Vengeance. Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige credited Gosling with initiating the entire project during Comic-Con. “It was Gosling who had the vision. It was Gosling who had the pitch that won over Shawn, that had them come and pitch us this idea, which led to us on stage,” Feige explained.

The X-Men reboot comes from director Jake Schreier and features Kit Connor as Scott Summers alongside Adam Driver as Nathaniel Milbury. Ryan Coogler directs Black Panther 3, casting David Jonsson as the grown T’Challa II in the post-Secret Wars timeline. Marvel additionally revealed a mystery MCU project dated November 11, 2029, adding to two previously announced slots that year.

The packed 2028 calendar arrives as the Multiverse Saga wraps up through Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars. After multiple years of lighter output, the studio clearly intends to rebuild momentum with its traditionally successful annual model.
