Ryan Gosling’s Starfighter Is Chasing Star Wars’ Magic Without Its Baggage

Star Wars: Starfighter wants to channel the spirit of the Star Wars franchise without any of the baggage. So far, the Ryan Gosling movie is on the right track to success.

Lucasfilm desperately needs a win in its theatrical business, especially after the failure of The Mandalorian and Grogu. Starfighter will be the next opportunity to wow audiences and win them back to the theaters.

Starfighter features a star-studded cast, including Gosling, Flynn Gray, Matt Smith, Mia Goth, Aaron Pierre, Simon Bird, Jamael Westman, Daniel Ings, and Amy Adams. Plot details are under wraps, but the movie will revolve around Gosling’s character and his relationship with Gray’s character.

Shawn Levy directs Starfighter from a screenplay by Jonathan Tropper. The film is set roughly five years after The Rise of Skywalker.

Starfighter does not come out until May 2027, but the hype has already started. On The Town podcast, Imax CEO Rich Gelfond visited Starfighter’s set and said it’s a throwback to the “Harrison Ford kind of Star Wars.”

As for its box office chances, Gelfond said, “I’m on a limb on this one. I’ll tell you, take it to the bank … I think it’s going to be good.”

Take Gelfond’s comments with a grain of salt, but he’s not the only one who wants Starfighter to work. Many fans are desperate for a Star Wars movie, and so far, Starfighter gives people hope for the future.

Star Wars: Starfighter is the perfect blend of nostalgia and originality

Star Wars used to feel special. The movies were events that people would cherish, returning to the theaters multiple times to watch. The Rise of Skywalker killed any momentum Star Wars had in theaters.

Instead of relaunching a new franchise after The Rise of Skywalker, Lucasfilm elected to turn their hit TV show into a movie. After underperforming at the box office, The Mandalorian and Grogu were a misfire.

Starfighter feels like a Star Wars cinematic event. It’s an original story with new characters, something Star Wars desperately needs. The franchise must create brand-new characters for audiences to latch onto and root for. Starfighter can still honor the themes and style of the original trilogy while telling a completely different story. Star Wars does not need the Skywalkers in every movie.

Say what you want about his filmmaking style, but Levy knows how to helm successful blockbusters. Levy’s Deadpool & Wolverine is currently the highest-grossing R-rated movie of all time. At the very least, Starfighter will have several action-packed scenes that dazzle on a big screen.

For the future of Star Wars, let’s hope Gelfond is right about Starfighter.
