Wonka 2 Update Is the Last Things Fans of Timothée Chalamet Movie Wanted to Hear

Fans waiting for Timothée Chalamet to reprise his role as Willy Wonka from the 2023 musical should prepare for disappointment. The Paul King-directed film was released to positive reviews, exploring the origins of the founder of the Wonka Chocolate Factory. At the time, King had expressed interest in returning to direct a sequel, confirming that one was in development soon after its release.

In a new interview with Variety, Wonka writer Simon Farnaby gave an update on the status of its sequel. The writer revealed that while the first film was successful, its sequel is unlikely to move forward any time soon. The reason for this is Chalamet’s busy schedule. “He wants to do one, but he’s not sure about timing or what he wants to do next,” said Farnaby, adding that “Wonka 2” is “delayed indefinitely.”

The sequel still has one major advantage despite the setback

While it may take a while to get Wonka 2 off the ground, Chalamet’s continued interest in reprising the role is a major advantage for the franchise. In recent years, Chalamet has garnered critical acclaim and awards recognition for his roles in the Dune franchise, A Complete Unknown, and Marty Supreme.

Since the publication of Roald Dahl’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, the source material has been adapted several times. The first came in the form of the 1971 musical, Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory, starring Gene Wilder as the titular character. Following that, Tim Burton directed a 2005 adaptation that saw Johnny Depp play Wonka. Netflix will soon release its own animated version, titled Charlie vs. the Chocolate Factory.

For now, fans can look forward to Chalamet’s next big-screen appearance in Dune: Part 3, which is scheduled to hit theaters alongside Marvel’s Avengers: Doomsday on December 18, 2026.
