Molly Ringwald Reveals Which Famous 1990 Movie Role She Regrets Passing On

Molly Ringwald regrets turning down an iconic role that could have changed the trajectory of her career. In an episode of Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen, The Breakfast Club star revealed which project she regretted turning down.

Ringwald replied, “Ghost,” leaving Cohen and the audience stunned. Ghost was released in 1990, and the role she passed on was taken up by Demi Moore. The Pretty in Pink star added, “But Demi is great in it. So, good for Demi. She did a great job.”

Still stunned by her response, Cohen noted that this project could have been another big break for the actress. However, Ringwald responded, “I know, but it was just was not meant to be.”

Why did Molly Ringwald turn down Ghost?

Molly Ringwald was already famous back then for her iconic role as Claire Standish in The Breakfast Club. The actress passed on Ghost because she did not connect with the script.

Ghost was released in U.S. theaters on July 13, 1990. The movie became a massive box office hit and grossed $517.6 million during its theatrical run against an estimated budget of $22 million.

The romantic fantasy thriller also received five Academy Award nominations. The movie won two categories for Best Supporting Actress (Whoopi Goldberg) and Best Writing, Screenplay Written Directly for the Screen (Bruce Joel Rubin)

Ringwald wasn’t the only star to pass on a lead role in the 1990 thriller. As per People, Bruce Willis also declined the lead role, stating, “I just didn’t get it.” However, Willis also called himself a “knucklehead” for giving up the role that eventually went to Patrick Swayze.

The dark romance movie follows the story of Sam Wheat, a murdered banker who returns to earth as a ghost, communicating with his girlfriend Molly to protect her from the business partner who orchestrated his death.
