Ice Cream Man’s Rotten Tomatoes Score Isn’t What Eli Roth Fans Wanted After Thanksgiving

Ice Cream Man’s Rotten Tomatoes scores are here, and it is not looking good. The latest horror flick by Eli Roth met with a flurry of unfavorable reviews ahead of its theatrical release on August 7.

At the time of this article’s publication, Ice Cream Man has a 31 percent score on Rotten Tomatoes’ Tomatometer with 48 reviews. The number marks a sharp drop from Roth’s previous slasher, Thanksgiving, which received a whopping 83% score from 150 critics. Thanksgiving’s success had thus raised expectations for Roth’s new movie. However, it looks like Ice Cream Man has failed to deliver.

The film follows a quiet suburban town where young kids turn into homicidal maniacs after having sweet treats from a mysterious ice cream vendor. The movie stars Ari Millen as the titular villain. Other cast members include Charlie Zeltzer, Shiloh O’Reilly, Kiori Mirza Waldman, Sarah Abbott, and Benjamin Byron Davis.

Ice Cream Man has received generally unfavorable reviews from critics, earning an average rating of 4.3/10 on Rotten Tomatoes. Meanwhile, the audience score has yet to come in.

One critic who gave it 1 out of 5 stars said, “There’s no real suspense or tension that’s built in for the sake of jump scares.” He added, “I would expect a finer eye for that coming from Eli Roth.”

“The comically over-the-top violence is tailor-made for the Midnight Madness crowd,” another said. “But Ice Cream Man quickly runs out of flavor thanks to its flimsy script, making it more messy than memorable.”

A third critic noted that the movie “had the potential to be a fun… But it’s undone by flat performances, inconsistent tone, and a messy script.”

Amid the barrage of negative reviews, some reviews were a little more forgiving. One RT scorer said, “If you know that you’re just in for a gorefest with a demented edge, you’re sure to have a good time, even if it lacks much in the way of cinematic nutritional value.”
