Ryan Reynolds’ Mayday arrives on Apple TV next month
Ryan Reynolds is set to headline another major film with the upcoming release of Mayday. Apple TV+ has confirmed that the original feature will premiere on September 4, 2026, making it the actor’s next big-screen project to reach audiences ahead of his next Marvel Cinematic Universe appearance.
Written and directed by Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley, Mayday is an action comedy set during the Cold War. The story follows U.S. Navy pilot Lieutenant Troy “Assassin” Kelly, whose top-secret mission over Soviet territory goes disastrously wrong, forcing him to abandon his aircraft and survive alone behind enemy lines.
Troy’s situation changes when he is discovered by Nikolai Ustinov, a former KGB agent with an affinity for American culture. Instead of becoming enemies, Troy finds an unexpected ally in Ustinov. As they work toward Troy’s rescue, the pair develop an unlikely bond despite their vastly different backgrounds.
A previously released trailer offers a closer look at Troy’s situation after his mission goes off course. Following the crash, he wakes up restrained inside a remote cabin, where he comes face-to-face with Ustinov. The former KGB agent explains that he tied Troy down so he could treat a severed artery without proper anesthesia. It also introduces the pair’s unusual dynamic as the story unfolds.
Reynolds leads the cast as Troy “Assassin” Kelly alongside Kenneth Branagh as Nikolai Ustinov. The film also stars Maria Bakalova as Anna Ustinov, Marcin Dorociński as Alexander Volkov, and David Morse as Harold Kelly, among other supporting cast members.
