Why Jumanji: Open World’s Real-World Twist is a Brilliant Return to the 1995 Classic

Sony Pictures brings back its star-studded cast for Jumanji: Open World, which will now feature a familiar real-world twist. The movie’s trailer shows that the upcoming adventure sequel will return the franchise to its original roots. This is another clever way to honor the original 1995 movie while also maintaining the new film’s video game concept.

Jumanji: Open World stars Dwayne Johnson, Jack Black, Kevin Hart, Karen Gillan, Alex Wolff, Madison Iseman, Morgan Turner, Ser’Darius Blain, Rhys Darby, Nick Jonas, and Danny DeVito. The final installment is directed by Jake Kasdan, who also co-wrote the screenplay with Jeff Pinkner and Scott Rosenberg. Ahead of the new film’s Christmas debut later this year, the popular action-adventure franchise already has a combined worldwide gross of over $1.7 billion.

How Jumanji: Open World’s real-world twist connects the sequel to the original film

After watching the Jumanji: Open World trailer, I was impressed by how the new sequel will bring back the magical game into the real world. Even though it’s already a familiar concept, the creative team manages to find an ingenious and refreshing way to do it by utilizing video game elements. The trailer teased that the iconic titular game has once again evolved into a digital video game program. This makes it more complex and dangerous because the titular game can no longer be contained by a physical board or machine.

This clever twist absolutely elevated the stakes for the new sequel’s story. It also allowed the creative team to bridge the gap between the franchise’s video game and classic board game concepts. In addition to the real-world twist, Jumanji: Open World pays tribute to Robin Williams’ iconic 1995 movie by once again tapping Bebe Neuwirth to reprise her role as Aunt Nora. It would be interesting to see how she’ll react to the news that Jumanji’s wild animals are once again creating havoc in her town, which should bring back memories from her previous experience in the original movie.

However, even though as a fan of the new movie’s real-world twist, I don’t think that it was a good idea to repeat the last two movies’ body-swapping gimmick. Although it is indeed hilarious to see Johnson, Hart, Gillan, and Black embody unexpected characters, it kind of feels repetitive. The creative team should have built the sequel’s story only around the new twist. Seeing them play video game characters who are stuck in demo mode is already enough for the audience.
