Obsession Star Eyed To Join Brendan Fraser & Rachel Weisz in The Mummy 4

The star of Obsession could be trading horror for ancient curses in The Mummy 4. One of 2026’s biggest breakout stars is in early talks to join the beloved franchise’s long-awaited return.

Michael Johnston is in talks to join Universal’s The Mummy 4

Obsession breakout Michael Johnston is in early talks to join Universal Pictures’ upcoming Mummy sequel, The InSneider first reported. The rising star would appear alongside returning franchise veterans Brendan Fraser, Rachel Weisz and John Hannah. A Universal representative declined to comment on the potential casting.

Johnston landed his breakthrough role as Bear in Curry Barker’s low-budget horror film Obsession for Focus Features. The thriller has earned over $450 million globally, becoming the highest-grossing movie ever produced for under $1 million. The film’s massive commercial performance has placed Johnston on casting shortlists throughout the industry after nearly 15 years as a working actor.

Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett of Radio Silence are directing the untitled fourth installment. David Coggeshall wrote the screenplay after previously penning The Family Plan and Orphan: First Kill. Longtime franchise producer Sean Daniel returns alongside William Sherak, James Vanderbilt, and Paul Neinstein through Project X Entertainment. Clayton Townsend rounds out the producing team, while Fraser and Hivemind’s Jason F. Brown serve as executive producers.

Fraser and Weisz have both finalized deals to return as Rick O’Connell and Egyptologist Evelyn O’Connell. Weisz sat out the 2008 threequel The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, making her comeback especially significant for fans. The franchise’s three earlier entries earned a combined $1.8 billion at the worldwide box office.

Universal set the film for a wide theatrical debut on Oct. 15, 2027. The production expects to begin shooting next month. Gersh Agency and Tash Moseley Management represent Johnston, best known prior to Obsession for the television series Teen Wolf and numerous voice performances. Studio executives Jay Polidoro and Jacqueline Garell will oversee the project for Universal.
