This is the highest-rated film in Rachel McAdams’ filmography on Rotten Tomatoes. It has received a 99% score on the Tomatometer, with critics calling the movie “effervescent and refreshingly frank about the travails of puberty.”

It is based on the novel by Judy Blume. The synopsis reads, “11-year-old Margaret is uprooted from her life in New York City to the suburbs of New Jersey, going through the tumultuous throes of puberty with new friends in a new school. In a previous interview with ComingSoon, McAdams spoke about the central themes of the movie, stating, “There are so many things about this book and adaptation that I think are important stories to tell about identity and family dynamics, but yes, also about religion.”

She further explained that religion is a “tricky” thing that is worth exploring, adding, “It’s a huge part of our world still, and a big part of what it is to come into yourself is understanding your relationship to it.”
