The Amateur is now available to stream on Amazon Prime Video. Based on Robert Littell’s 1981 novel of the same name, the 123-minute film follows the story of Charlie Heller, a brilliant CIA cryptographer who tragically loses his wife in a terrorist attack in London. When the CIA refuses to catch the culprits, Charlie takes matters into his own hands. With no prior experience as a trained professional, he uses his own set of skills to track down those responsible.

The movie features an ensemble cast of Rami Malek as Charlie Heller, Rachel Brosnahan as Sarah, and Laurence Fishburne as Henderson in the lead roles. The supporting cast includes Caitríona Balfe, Michael Stuhlbarg, Holt McCallany, Julianne Nicholson, Adrian Martinez, Danny Sapani, and Jon Bernthal.

James Hawes directed the film, and the screenplay is co-written by Ken Nolan and Gary Spinelli. The Amateur was produced by Hutch Parker, Dan Wilson, Rami Malek, and Joel B. Michaels, with JJ Hook also attached as an executive producer. 20th Century Studios, a production house operating under the wing of The Walt Disney Company, was the distributor of the movie.

Before its streaming debut, The Amateur received mixed but generally positive responses from critics on Rotten Tomatoes. Currently, it holds a 61% professional critic score based on 197 reviews. However, it holds a much more favorable audience score, with the Popcornmeter reading an impressive 87% rating. The film grossed more than $96 million worldwide, including about $48 million at the domestic box office.

Before arriving on Prime Video, The Amateur was made available to stream on Hulu and Disney+ in July 2025. This action-thriller movie with foreign espionage, high-stakes missions, and strong performances will be a worthy addition to your watchlist.
