In a move that no one saw coming, it’s been confirmed that writer Danny McBride will also direct the untitled new G.I. Joe movie, reports The Hollywood Reporter. He was previously tasked with writing the story for a new installment.
The latest update means McBride has a lot to prove with his moviemaking skills on a big-budget project. Especially, considering that he’s mostly known for working on TV shows. He has directed numerous episodes of the shows he was part of, including Righteous Gemstones and Vice Principals.
With the new G.I. Joe movie, Danny McBride will actually make his proper directorial debut. At the moment, major plot details for the next installment are still under wraps. However, McBride recently teased intriguing details about what fans can expect from the next film.
During his appearance on Josh Horowitz’s Happy Sad Confused podcast, the 49-year-old mentioned the new movie “grounds GI Joe. It’s not a comedy. It’s kind of suspense and action. Yeah, it’s going to be a lot of fun. Whole ensemble.”
McBride also touched upon the likely setting of the movie. “You’re following Duke and a group of other Joes. There’s a town, Springfield, that is secretly all Cobra. That is where our film takes place.”
Additionally, he expressed immense excitement about the opportunity to write the screenplay for the next entry. “I’m stoked about it. I’m really fired up about the script. Paramount seems fired up about it. Hopefully, we’re shooting it next year.”
Paramount’s new G.I. Joe movie has yet to receive an official release date window.
