Liza Colón-Zayas shares hilarious story of working with Tom Holland

Liza Colón-Zayas recalled a hilarious moment she shared with Tom Holland during the filming of Spider-Man: Brand New Day.

Discussing her role, Colón-Zayas revealed that she plays a detective in the upcoming Marvel film and said her character shares “an intense kind of connection with Spider-Man.” She then described filming a scene in which Holland’s character was supposed to be crying as she held his hands. According to the actor, “There was a scene where it’s like really intense, and he’s supposed to be crying, and I bring his hands down and/or I hold his hands like get a grip.”

Colón-Zayas recalled that director Destin Daniel Cretton repeatedly reminded Holland, “Tom, you know, remember to bring your hands down.” She added, “And he got the note a few times, and then he finally said, ‘I can’t. Liza’s hands are too strong.’”

The conversation then turned to how Colón-Zayas joined the project. When Haddish asked whether she had auditioned for the role, the actor replied, “No,” prompting applause from the audience. She explained that she instead received a call informing her that Cretton wanted to meet her over Zoom.

Reflecting on that meeting, Colón-Zayas said, “I was in Chicago, and we zoomed, and we just laughed. I don’t know. It was like, ‘There’s no way in hell.’ Like, ‘I don’t know anything about the multiverses or what have you.’” When Haddish reacted with surprise, Colón-Zayas laughed and replied, “And now I do.”

Spider-Man: Brand New Day will make its theatrical debut in the United States on July 31, 2026.
