Netflix, Paramount, and More Eye Letterboxd Purchase Despite Fan Outrage

Letterboxd, the popular social platform for sharing movie reviews, may soon be acquired by another company. The website has been active since 2011 and allows users to post and share reviews while connecting to others, similar to Goodreads.

Who is seemingly interested in purchasing Letterboxd?

Netflix, Paramount Skydance, Sony Pictures Entertainment, a private-equity giant TPG, and Reddit’s co-creator are all reportedly interested in acquiring Letterboxd (via Variety). According to the report, Letterboxd’s founders have engaged in early talks with several potential buyers, which include the ones mentioned above.

Ever since reports of a potential Letterboxd sale emerged, fans have expressed concern about the platform’s future and its legitimacy. @Duhlorean98 was pretty disappointed and wrote, “I don’t want to see Letterboxd turn into a useless extension on the side of the Netflix app to rate their shows and movies. Please God, save my soul.” @PoorOldRoloTony suggested, “I say we make Letterboxd a publicly funded service.” @basedgizmo sarcastically wrote, “It’s Letterbover.” @shadowknightdk urged, “leave letterboxd alone wtf.”

Letterboxd is currently owned by founders Matthew Buchanan and Karl von Randow, who share ownership with Canadian company Tiny. Earlier this year, Versant Media, which owns Rotten Tomatoes, and The Ankler were also reported to be in talks with Tiny to acquire the service (via Semafor).

The platform primarily allows users to write and share movie reviews, but has recently expanded to include a video rental store. As of July 2026, Letterboxd has amassed over 30 million users across the world, growing significantly during the COVID-19 pandemic. The platform is currently valued at above $50 million. According to the report, Letterboxd’s sale is being handled by LionTree, an investment bank, which is “floating” the valuation of the platform at $250 million.

At the time of writing, Letterboxd employs a freemium model, where users can sign up for free. The paid Pro and Patron tiers offer access to an ad-free version of the platform, along with more profile customization, deeper access to stats, and more personalized features. The platform’s YouTube channel also regularly features interviews with celebrities on their promotional tours, as well as videos from celebrities talking about their favorite films.

It remains to be seen whether Letterboxd is sold to any of the mentioned entertainment companies.
