‘I Hate the Change’: Tangled Live-Action Movie Is Upsetting Fans for All the Wrong Reasons
Disney’s upcoming Tangled remake is already frustrating fans of the original film. The remake will retell the story of the 2010 film, which was based on Rapunzel. The movie is currently filming in Spain.
Why are people already mad at the live-action Tangled movie?
Fans have noticed from the film’s new set photos that the production has changed the color scheme in the kingdom from purple and yellow to blue. Most Disney live-action remakes, like Moana, stick very close to the original animated film, but it appears the Tangled remake is taking some liberties.
One fan, going by @Antoine_F2, suggested that the new colors may be used to represent the castle’s inhabitants mourning the loss of Rapunzel. “Maybe a mourning color? Like when Rapunzel was lost, they rebranded the colors and when she comes back they will change to purple? Like they did in Snow White… like a color palette to feel the kingdom is still in sad times,” wrote the user.
Another user on X, @LaddCann, suggests that the change may be due to a technical reason, as digital cameras capture color differently in reality. The user noted that “Violet is a hard wavelength for digital to capture”. The user suggested that by filming with blue colors and correcting it in post-production, the final colors may appear closer to the animated source.
Fans pointed out that the design of the sun on the tapestries differs from the one in the animated film. Others argued that changing the kingdom’s colors to blue contradicts the story’s historical context, as purple has traditionally been a signifier of wealth and royalty.
Previous set photos have already revealed the return of a fan-favorite character, along with more looks at the recreation of Rapunzel’s iconic tower.
The cast for the live-action Tangled remake reportedly includes Teagan Croft, Milo Manheim, Kathryn Hahn, Diego Luna, and more. The film is being directed by Michael Gracey from a script written by Jennifer Kaytin Robinson and Michael Montemayor. The original 2010 film grossed over $590 million worldwide and was widely praised by critics and audiences. The original film’s co-director also revealed why Disney canceled Tangled 2, instead opting for the remake.
The Tangled remake does not currently have an official release date.
