Hunger Games’ New Haymitch Actor Spotlighted in Sunrise on the Reaping Video
Lionsgate has shared the new video for The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping. The upcoming prequel spin-off to the popular blockbuster dystopian franchise is scheduled to arrive in theaters on November 20, 2026.
“The film will revisit the world of Panem 24 years before the events of The Hunger Games, starting on the morning of the reaping of the 50th Hunger Games, also known as the Second Quarter Quell,” reads the official synopsis.

What happens in the new Sunrise on the Reaping video?
The video highlights Joseph Zada’s upcoming portrayal of a young Haymitch Abernathy. The iconic character was famously played by Woody Harrelson in the original Hunger Games movies, in which he was introduced as Katniss and Peeta’s cynical mentor. This featurette was released in celebration of Haymitch’s birthday and Reaping Day.
The trailer shows Zada, director Francis Lawrence, producer Nina Jacobson, and the other cast members as they open up about Harrelson’s iconic portrayal and how it influenced Zada’s performance. They also teased what fans should expect to see from the beloved character, including the start of his revolutionary spirit.
The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping is directed by Lawrence, with Billy Ray and Michael Lesslie writing the screenplay. It is once again based on Suzanne Collins’ Hunger Games prequel novel of the same name. The movie also stars Jesse Plemons, Ralph Fiennes, Glenn Close, Kieran Culkin, Elle Fanning, Mckenna Grace, Maya Hawke, Kelvin Harrison Jr., and Whitney Peak. It is produced by Nina Jacobson, Brad Simpson, and Lawrence.
