Minions & Monsters Reviews Are Shocking Despicable Me Fans for This Reason
Illumination‘s latest animated film, Minions & Monsters, is shocking Despicable Me fans with an unexpected development. Releasing later this week, it is the seventh installment in the Despicable Me franchise, and the third prequel in the series.
Why are the Minions & Monsters reviews shocking Despicable Me fans?
Historically, the Despicable Me franchise hasn’t scored the greatest reviews since the first film. That is doubly true of the Minions prequels. However, Minions & Monsters has gotten off to a strong start with overwhelmingly positive reviews from critics. The film has yet to receive an official Rotten Tomatoes score, but at the time of writing, all 24 published reviews are positive. That’s not to say that every review is completely glowing, but every reviewer has recommended it, which translates to a high score on the Rotten Tomatoes aggregate scale.
ComingSoon’s own Jonathan Sim called it the “best Despicable Me movie in years,” giving it a 7/10 in his review. Sim called it a “hysterical, enjoyable film,” which has “tons of enjoyable action, and the narrative is simple,” noting that it will bring joy to both children and adults. The review has also ranked it high on the list of all Minions movies.

Variety’s Guy Lodge was also positive about the film, calling it “a weird, willful popular entertainment for much of its running time that it holds your goodwill.” Empire magazine’s John Nugent gave it 3/5, writing that it is “more of the same from this franchise, really.”
James Crooks of Discussing Film called it the “best adventure with the Minions yet, delivering a hilarious and heartfelt ode to cinema’s past that is sure to resonate with young cinephiles.”
The film is predicted to earn $75-85 million over its three-day domestic opening start in the United States. The franchise has collectively grossed over $5.4 billion at the box office. While Minions & Monsters is expected to do well, it will compete with Toy Story 5 at the box office.
The upcoming film is described as the “rambunctious, ridiculous and totally true story of how the Minions conquered Hollywood, became movie stars, lost everything, unleashed monsters onto the world and then banded together to try and save the planet from the mayhem they had just created.”
Minions & Monsters is directed by Pierre Coffin and releases in theaters on July 1, 2026.
