Supergirl: How Much Money WB Will Likely Lose on DCU Movie After Weak Debut Revealed

Supergirl didn’t have a great opening weekend at the box office. It has underperformed with an expected loss for Warner Bros. costing the company millions unlike DCU‘s Superman.

How much money is Warner Bros. expected to lose because of Supergirl?

Supergirl was released in June 2026 and had an underwhelming opening weekend. Warner Bros. is expected to lose $100 to $120 million during its theatrical run because of its weak opening. Moreover, the film may stall at up to $210 million globally. However, other sources suggest that the loss will be closer to $80 to $85 million if the ticket sales reach at least $200 million.

“This was always going to be a tough hurdle for DC and Warner Bros. because Supergirl isn’t a character that has ever created an event-level blockbuster. Audience perception of ‘Supergirl’ was not good. This is just a case of the film wasn’t good enough to become an event.”, says Jeff Bock, an analyst at Exhibitor Relations.

The film’s production cost was $170 million, with a roughly $120 million marketing budget. The movie focuses on Superman’s cousin Kara Zor-El and her quest for vengeance, made $7.8 million domestically and $5.2 million internationally on its first day.

On the opening weekend, these numbers went up to $38 million domestically and $68 million globally. In contrast, David Corenswet’s Superman made around $125 million on its opening weekend and earned $618 million globally at the end of its theatrical run.

Alongside underwhelming ticket sales, Craig Gillespie’s movie also received a low 57% Tomatometer score on Rotten Tomatoes. Moreover, it will also compete with other summer movies like Minions & Monsters, Moana, and Toy Story 5, which is already out in theaters.

The 10-year DCU slate has already been set by co-chairmen and co-CEOs, James Gunn and Peter Safran. In an interview with the New York Times, Safran said, “While ‘Supergirl’ didn’t meet our box office expectations, it’s just one component of a broader, long-term strategy at DC Studios that we remain confident in.” The next movie in DCU’s slate, Clayface, has an estimated budget of $40 million. Clayface will hit theaters on October 23, 2026.
