John Cena Is Ruling Over Streaming With His Hilarious R-Rated Comedy
John Cena‘s latest comedy is already leading Netflix’s movie rankings. The R-rated release has climbed to the rare spot in the U.S. Top 10. While critics remain divided, the film’s early streaming performance suggests it has found an audience looking for outrageous laughs and an unlikely buddy story.
John Cena’s Little Brother tops Netflix’s streaming charts post release
Netflix viewers have pushed Little Brother to the top of the platform’s U.S. movie rankings. According to Flix Patrol, it currently sits at No. 1, ahead of Voicemails for Isabelle, Maternal Instinct, 5 lbs. of Pressure, The 24th, and several other titles.
The comedy premiered on June 26 as a Netflix exclusive and wasted little time becoming one of the service’s biggest new releases. It did not receive a theatrical release, meaning it has no box office earnings.
Directed by Matt Spicer, Little Brother stars John Cena as Rudd, a successful real estate agent whose carefully planned life falls apart after Marcus, his eccentric former “Little Brother” from a mentoring program, unexpectedly returns.
Eric André plays Marcus, while Michelle Monaghan, Christopher Meloni, Sherry Cola, Ego Nwodim, Caleb Hearon, and Ben Ahlers round out the supporting cast. The screenplay comes from Jarrad Paul and Andrew Mogel, with Netflix serving as the distributor.
The comedy received mixed reviews, earning a 53% critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes. Many reviewers enjoyed the chemistry between Cena and André, but others felt the jokes didn’t land consistently.
Even so, several critics singled out Cena’s sharp comic timing and André’s bold, energetic performance as the film’s biggest positives. Viewers were even less impressed. The movie currently holds a 49% audience score, meaning it has struggled to win over general audiences.
Cena has built one of Hollywood’s strongest post-WWE careers. After becoming a record 16-time world champion in WWE, he successfully transitioned into acting with memorable roles in The Suicide Squad, Peacemaker, Blockers, Vacation Friends, Fast X, Ricky Stanicky, and Jackpot!.
