Why New Mahershala Ali Movie Trailer Is Making Blade & MCU Fans Extra Sad
The trailer for Mahershala Ali‘s upcoming film has disappointed some MCU fans. Ali was once announced as the lead in Marvel Studios’ Blade, a project that has since been stuck in development limbo.
Why are Blade fans sad about the new Mahershala Ali trailer?
Mahershala Ali is starring in a new Amazon MGM Studios movie titled Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother. The film is directed by Bassam Tariq, who was previously attached to direct the MCU Blade movie at one point in time. Seeing the two collaborate on a different film has disappointed Blade fans, who are lamenting that their MCU collaboration never materialized.
In the upcoming drama, Mahershala Ali plays Latif, a “devoutly religious hitman who struggles to balance work, faith and fatherhood.” The film follows his journey after his wife’s death, which takes him “across Houston to protect his children, confronting the forces closing in around him – and the beliefs threatening to unravel within.”

Many fans have expressed their frustration and sadness over Ali teaming up with Tariq in a movie outside the MCU. “How do you allow TWO Blade adjacent film to be made on your watch: ‘Sinners’ & ‘YOUR MOTHER YOUR MOTHER YOUR MOTHER’,” reads one fan’s post.
Another fan wrote, “Ima just pretend this is Blade ?” One fan compared the film’s premise to that of Blade, noting, “The director said ‘since they can’t make the blade movie, we’d give you your own sword and have you fight for your family, close enough eh?'”
Marvel Studios announced Ali’s casting as Blade during its 2019 San Diego Comic-Con panel. Bassam Tariq was originally attached to a version of the film before exiting it in 2022. Tariq was replaced by Yann Demange, who also exited Blade in 2024. Various iterations of the script were produced, including one set during the 1920s. Costumes reportedly created for that version were later used in Ryan Coogler‘s vampire film Sinners.
While Ali remains attached to the project, Marvel Studios has not announced a new release date for Blade. Moon Knight star Oscar Isaac recently discussed the possibility of a Midnight Suns movie introducing Blade to the MCU.
The film is written and directed by Bassam Tariq. The film is produced by Lucan Toh, Babak Anvari, and Bassam Tariq. It stars Mahershala Ali, John Cho, Abubakr Ali, Laith Nakli, Tramell Tillman, Tiffany Boone, Giancarlo Esposito, Adia, and Jaheel Kamara.
Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother releases in select theaters on September 25, 2026, and will get a wide release later in October.
