Toy Story 5 Has Made More Money Than Disney’s Costly Star Wars Gamble
Nearly a week after its release, Toy Story 5 continues to dominate at the box office. In addition to its commercial success, the latest sequel to Pixar‘s popular animated franchise has also been well-received by many critics and moviegoers. It currently holds a 92% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, based on 261 reviews.
What is the update on Toy Story 5’s box office?
According to Box Office Mojo, Toy Story 5 has already earned more money for Disney than the studio’s most recently released Star Wars movie. So far, the new animated movie has grossed over $328 million globally, which is $6 million more than Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu‘s entire theatrical run. This makes sense, especially when the Toy Story franchise has more worldwide appeal to audiences of all ages.
Even though the original Disney+ show was popular, its movie sequel still underperformed at the box office, grossing $322 million against a budget of around $150 million. This was Disney’s first Star Wars movie release in nearly seven years, after 2019’s Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.
Toy Story 5 was directed by Andrew Stanton (Finding Nemo), who also co-wrote the screenplay with Kenna Harris, based on a story by Stanton. The next installment will also feature the voices of Hanks as Woody, Tim Allen as Buzz Lightyear, Joan Cusack as Jessie, Greta Lee as Lilypad, Conan O’Brien as Smarty Pants, and Tony Hale as Forky. Joining them are John Ratzenberger as Hamm, Wallace Shawn as Rex, Blake Clark as Slinky Dog, Jeff Bergman as Mr. Potato Head, Anna Vocino as Mrs. Potato Head, Annie Potts as Bo Peep, Bonnie Hunt as Dolly, Melissa Villaseñor as Karen Beverly, John Hopkins as Mr. Pricklepants, Kristen Schaal as Trixie, Ernie Hudson as Combat Carl, Keanu Reeves as Duke Caboom, Craig Robinson as Atlas, Shelby Rabara as Snappy, Scarlett Spears as Bonnie, Mykal-Michelle Harris as Blaze, and Matty Matheson as Dr. Nutcase.
