DC’s R-Rated Knightfall Trailer Has Fans Obsessed With 1 Character & It’s Not Batman
The Batman: Knightfall trailer just dropped, and fans can’t stop talking about someone who isn’t the Dark Knight. DC’s first look at its R-rated animated trilogy has fans celebrating the return of a fan-favorite Gotham vigilante.
DC fans are hyped about Azrael in Batman: Knightfall trailer
DC Studios dropped the first trailer for Batman: Knightfall Part 1: Knightfall at the Annecy International Film Festival.
The R-rated animated film features Anson Mount as Batman, Michael Mando as Bane, and Pablo Schreiber as Azrael. Fans on social media quickly expressed excitement over Azrael’s appearance in the trailer.
One user wrote, “He’s finally back,” while another declared, “It’s finally your time king.” A different fan acknowledged the emotional weight of the storyline ahead. They wrote, “Its gonna be sad watching what happens to Bruce but when my boy shows up.” Another user shared nostalgic excitement, saying, “I had this figure when I was a kid. Yes WB, I will watch your movie.”
Azrael is the alter ego of Jean-Paul Valley, a character DC Comics introduced in 1992. Valley was a university student who discovered he belonged to a secret religious order called the Order of St. Dumas. The order had trained him since birth as their lethal enforcer through a process called “The System.”
He initially operated as an independent vigilante before joining Batman’s circle of allies. His costume featured a red and gold design that set him apart from Gotham’s other heroes.
Jeff Wamester directed the film from a screenplay by Jeremy Adams. The trilogy adapts the iconic “Knightfall” saga that ran through DC’s Batman comics from 1993 to 1994. DC’s animated comic adaptations historically arrive with changes to the source material. The Knightfall trilogy may follow a similar approach and alter certain story elements.
Spoiler warning for the original Knightfall comics: In the storyline, Bane breaks Batman’s back, and Bruce Wayne passes the mantle to Azrael. However, Azrael grows increasingly violent and unstable as Batman’s replacement. Bruce eventually recovers and fights Azrael to reclaim the cowl.
Batman: Knightfall Part 1: Knightfall will debut later this year.
