Matt Damon’s New Daniels Superhero Movie Casts the Summer I Turned Pretty Breakout Star
A breakout TV star just landed a major role opposite Matt Damon in the Daniels’ next film. The Everything Everywhere All at Once duo is building a star-studded ensemble for their secretive Universal project.
The latest casting addition to Matt Damon and Daniels’ upcoming movie
Sean Kaufman has entered negotiations to join Matt Damon in the untitled event film from Daniels at Universal, according to Deadline. The filmmaking duo of Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert will write and direct. Sandra Oh and Charles Melton have already joined the cast.
Damon takes the central role in the project. However, sources indicate the younger ensemble cast will carry equal weight in the story. Notably, Kaufman will front that younger group after weeks of auditions by the Daniels. Universal declined to comment on the casting.
Meanwhile, story details for the project remain tightly guarded. Kwan, Scheinert, and Jonathan Wang will produce through Playgrounds under its overall deal with Universal. Additionally, the company’s Kwan and Wang previously produced The AI Doc: Or How I Became an Apocaloptimist through Focus Features. That documentary debuted in March 2026.
Furthermore, Sara Scott, Executive VP Production Development, and Jacqueline Garell, Director of Production Development, will oversee the film for Universal. Theaters will receive the project on November 19, 2027. The Daniels last delivered Everything Everywhere All at Once, which swept the 2023 Oscars.
Beyond this role, Kaufman gained worldwide attention for playing Steven in Prime Video’s hit series The Summer I Turned Pretty. He will return for the franchise’s forthcoming film continuation. The actor also appeared in Apple TV+’s sci-fi drama For All Mankind during its fifth season.
Moreover, he is confirmed to return for the sixth and final season. Additional television credits include roles in Manifest, FBI: Most Wanted, and Law & Order: SVU. CESD Talent Agency and Untitled Entertainment represent him.
