Sequel to Taika Waititi’s 96% RT Horror Comedy in the Works
A decade after vowing to make it, Taika Waititi and Jemaine Clement have put pen to paper on a What We Do in the Shadows sequel. The latter has also revealed when the process will be done.
What to know about the new What We Do in the Shadows sequel
Jemaine Clement has confirmed that he and Taika Waititi recently started writing We’re Wolves, a feature sequel to their breakout hit What We Do in the Shadows, as per Collider. The project, first teased shortly after the original film’s release, spent years trapped in what Clement calls “talking about it” mode.
Fans of the 2014 mockumentary will remember Rhys Darby’s Anton leading a pack of lycanthropes who tried, with mixed results, to abandon swearing and violence. That group gets the spotlight this time around. Now, Clement gave a concrete update: “We’re writing it, actually. We started writing. For a long time, we were just talking about it. Now, we’ve started it. Very recently,” he told Collider.
The project has long existed in development limbo. As recently as 2019, Waititi described it as “the film that Jemaine and I keep pretending that we’re making.” Now the pair is carving out time between demanding schedules. Clement adds that work began this year whenever the two could collaborate. While the What We Do in the Shadows TV series wrapped its final season on FX in 2024, Clement confirmed the sequel remains a feature film, not a series extension. He also confirmed to Nexus Point News, saying, “We’re writing another What We Do in the Shadows movie, like a sequel to the movie.”
A key creative decision now looms over production. The original film, which has a 96% critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes, relied entirely on improvised dialogue built around a storyline, while the television adaptation adopted a scripted format with occasional improvisation.
Now, Jemaine Clement and Taika Waititi must decide whether We’re Wolves follows the film’s unscripted blueprint or the show’s controlled structure. “It’s quite good to have the control of the shot. It’s really fun just making it up on the fly,” Clement added while talking to Collider.
Clement estimates the script may not be finished until 2027, noting, “It helps to be in the same country, for Taika and I to be in the same country.” For now, regular Zoom sessions keep the project moving.
