Masters of the Universe Hits a Major Milestone but the Box Office Math Is Still Brutal
Masters of the Universe has crossed a major box office milestone. However, it continues to struggle financially, as the figure is nowhere near the break-even point. Directed by Travis Knight and starring Nicholas Galitzine, the movie is currently playing in theaters.
Masters of the Universe is far from breaking even despite new milestone
Masters of the Universe has reportedly earned $5.6 million from 2,517 theaters in its third weekend at the box office. As per Box Office Mojo, it has currently grossed approximately $56 million domestically and $45 million internationally. The movie has also earned roughly $101 million worldwide.
Despite passing the $100 million mark, the film is still lagging in its efforts to make twice its production budget, let alone break even.
The film has not been enjoying a strong box office run so far, partly complicated by competing releases this month. Last week, the film was projected to make $8.8 million, a considerable drop from its opening weekend figure, $29.4 million. Consequently, it placed fifth at the domestic box office, behind Disclosure Day, which secured the top spot, Obsession, Scary Movie, and Backrooms.
The film’s theatrical run is poised to get more challenging soon. Toy Story 5 has entered the competition, while Supergirl is flying onto big screens shortly. Meanwhile, the following month has multiple highly anticipated titles lined up for release. These include the live-action Moana remake, Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey, and Spider-Man: Brand New Day. Despite its diminishing box office presence, a sequel is reportedly in the works (via Forbes).
Meanwhile, as of writing, Masters of the Universe has received a 68% critical approval rating and a superior 86% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes.
The film was directed by Travis Knight. It stars Nicholas Galitzine in the lead role. The supporting cast includes Camila Mendes, Alison Brie, James Purefoy, Morena Baccarin, Jóhannes Haukur Jóhannesson, Kristen Wiig, Jared Leto, and Idris Elba.
