Rotten Tomatoes Shows Critics Love Zach Braff & Hayley Kiyoko’s New Movie

Zach Braff and Haley Kiyoko‘s latest movie is a hit among critics, and its Rotten Tomatoes score is proof. Based on a popular 2015 song by Kiyoko, the film marks her directorial debut as well.

What critics are saying about Girls Like Girls in reviews

Haley Kiyoko has managed to win over critics with Girls Like Girls, her first feature film as a director. The coming-of-age movie has received mostly positive and encouraging reactions upon its release on Friday.

Speaking of the critical responses, Mark Dujsik of Mark Reviews Movies said Girls Like Girls “provides complex characters and a bittersweet romance.” Callie Hanna of FandomWire called the film “joyful, tear-jerking, and unabashedly gay.”

Holly Hazelwood of Spectrum Culture wrote that the movie is a “time-honored format that takes a loving hand to execute.” Tyler Thier of In Review Online mentioned that despite the film using a “proven formula and massaging viewer sympathies a bit too forcefully,” it manages to implement “that formula earnestly and with no small amount of stylistic skill.”

Courtney Howard of Fresh Fiction praised Kiyoko’s directorial debut. The critic wrote that the story depicts a “rainbow of emotions complemented by two compelling lead performances” alongside “achingly gorgeous cinematography.”

Girls Like Girls gets a strong score on Rotten Tomatoes

At the time of this article’s publication, Girls Like Girls holds a solid Tomatometer score of 87% on Rotten Tomatoes.

The movie is based on Kiyoko’s hit single and best-selling novel of the same name, and also features all-new music from Kiyoko. It follows a heartfelt story set over the course of one sun-drenched summer, where Coley falls in love for the first time as she learns to accept herself along the way.

Besides Kiyoko, it also includes Zach Braff (Scrubs), Taylor John Smith (Where the Crawdads Sing), Levon Hawke, and Justin Lieberman. Producers on the project include Marc Platt, Katie McNicol, Dee Best, Michael Philip, Jason Moring, and Richard Alan Reid.

Girls Like Girls is now playing in theaters.
