Spider-Man: Brand New Day Trailer Confirms Secret X-Men Villain Casting
The Spider-Man: Brand New Day trailer makes it clear that the film includes a secret X-Men villain. While many rumors have pointed to Sadie Sink playing Jean Grey in the film, it appears the real X-Men casting has been hiding in plain sight.
What X-Men villain will show up in Spider-Man: Brand New Day?
There were previously reports that Tramell Tillman of Severance fame would be playing X-Men villain William Metzger in Spider-Man: Brand New Day. That casting is now confirmed, courtesy of the closed captions in the recently released trailer. Previous rumors suggested that Metzger would serve as the head of the Department of Damage Control. The same reports suggested that Tillman is expected to appear in more MCU movies after this.
The Brand New Day trailer shows Tillman’s Metzger talking to Spider-Man, telling him that they are facing “a threat we can’t control.” If Sink’s character, who is seemingly using abilities to possess people, turns out to be Jean Grey, then putting her in the sights of Metzger seems to be a setup for Marvel’s X-Men. The trailer confirmed that Peter Parker will be dealing with an unexpected mutation, thus reaching out to Bruce Banner, aka the Hulk. All of this looks like evidence that Brand New Day is more important to the MCU’s X-Men than previously thought.

The DODC has recently become more antagonistic in the MCU, as seen in Wonder Man. In the Marvel comics, William Metzger was the leader of an anti-mutant militia, appearing in 1999’s X-Men: Children of the Atom. Recent rumors have suggested that Metzger will go on to become the creator of the Sentinels, who have been a staple of X-Men comics. Traditionally, the Sentinels are created by Bolivar Trask, but it’s likely that Marvel Studios would want to differentiate its iteration of the X-Men saga by linking Metzger to the Sentinels.
Marvel has reportedly started the casting process for the X-Men reboot, which will be released following Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars. Spider-Man: Brand New Day arrives in theaters on July 31, 2026.
