Why Toy Story Never Got Its Own TV Spin-off Series
The Toy Story franchise has been hugely successful at the box office, with the fifth movie releasing this month. However, the Pixar franchise hasn’t released a single TV series under its banner so far. According to veteran Pixar producer Lindsey Collins, there is a simple explanation behind this decision.
Pixar producer explains why there hasn’t been a Toy Story series
While speaking with Comic Book Resources‘ Grae Drake, Collins revealed that discussions about a Toy Story spin-off series have taken place at Pixar. However, nothing ever materialized.
“Yes, there has been talk in the past,” the long-term Pixar executive said. “But, it was kind of a very specific, separate idea that somebody had ended up being like…Well, I think what it ultimately comes back to is that there is such a love for these characters, and the desire to keep them in this world that we’re so familiar with.”
Further explaining the absence of a Toy Story TV series, Collins revealed that a lack of fleshed-out story ideas has prevented Pixar from making the journey to the small screen.
“It’s not that we don’t want to see more of them,” she remarked. “But there’s also this fear of, like, we only want to do it when we know we have a really solid story. So the thought of actually coming up with something that would sustain a series, I think everybody’s like, ‘I don’t know, we can barely plan for a movie,’ so I think that feels daunting!”
The Toy Story franchise, which began with the original film of the same name in 1995, has produced a total of five films in the span of 31 years. The latest entry in the series, Toy Story 5, is presently on track to premiere on June 19, 2026.
