This Horror Film Is Predicted to Be an Oscar Contender for Best Picture
A new film has entered the early Oscars conversation as a potential nominee for Best Picture in 2027. Several months ago, the list of movies that were predicted to earn a nomination in the coveted category (which has ten spots available) included relatively safe choices, like Project Hail Mary, The Odyssey, and Dune: Part Three. Since then, a handful of new entries have become contenders, and one horror flick in particular could sway Academy voters to its side as it gains early award season buzz. Of course, there’s still a lot of time before preliminary voting begins for the 99th Academy Awards in December, so we’ll have to see if the film can maintain its momentum by the end of the year. The 2027 Oscars is set to air on March 14, 2027, on ABC and Hulu.
Obsession has a good chance to be nominated for the Best Picture Oscar in 2027
The horror movie Obsession has entered the top ten for films that are predicted to be nominated for Best Picture at the 2027 Oscars, as based on a bet on Kalshi (as of June 17). This is particularly impressive given the sheer number of potential nominees on the full list of options below:

- The Adventures of Cliff Booth – 41%
- The Social Reckoning – 36%
- Club Kid – 35%
- Behemoth – 34%

Per usual, it’s important to take these early predictions with a grain of salt considering how easy it is for these odds to change. Still, the bet already has a volume close to a quarter-million dollars, and it has been live for about three months at this point, so many of these percentages have settled to a degree.
Beyond these predictions, it’s difficult to bet against Obsession given the enormity of its box office success, despite it being directed and written by 26-year-old YouTuber Curry Barker. At the time of writing, the film has earned $290 million worldwide ($191 million domestic and $98 million international) on a mere $750,000 budget, making it the highest-grossing movie for Focus Features.
Obsession is one of the rare films to increase its box office performance after its release. And recently the movie has earned $19 million in its fifth domestic weekend, which is still more than its $17 million domestic opener. The film’s box office totals are inching closer to the $370 million haul of last year’s Best Picture nominee Sinners, a feat that should give Obsession more credit when Oscar voting begins.
More than that, the film could be nominated in two other Oscar categories as well. Curry Barker could earn an Original Screenplay nod and actress Inde Navarette’s tour-de-force performance as Nikki Freeman could earn her a Best Actress nomination. We wouldn’t be surprised if Barker receives a Best Director nod too considering the film’s achievement at the box office, with the understanding that the more nominations Obsession is able to secure, the greater chance it has at a Best Picture nod too.
While the horror genre can be hit or miss amid the prestige of the Oscars, Obsession could follow a similar trajectory to Jordan Peele’s Get Out that received four Academy Award nominations. And a Best Picture nod for the film would help the award show, which has seen declining ratings, appeal to younger viewers.
