Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu Hides a Sneaky Phantom Menace Callback
There’s a cool Star Wars: The Phantom Menace callback in The Mandalorian and Grogu. This crucial detail has been confirmed by none other than the film’s director Jon Favreau.
What is the sneaky Phantom Menace callback in The Mandalorian and Grogu?
During the in-theater director commentary, The Mandalorian and Grogu’s director, Jon Favreau, revealed that a subtle callback to Phantom Menace hides in plain sight. He mentioned the red laser barriers in the stadium, where Din Djarin or Mandalorian is forced to go against Rotta the Hutt, were actually inspired by Phantom Menace’s Duel of the Fates sequence, reports Gamesradar.
The Phantom Menace also featured laser gates on Naboo during Obi-Wan Kenobi’s duel with Darth Maul. It was an impressive detail for fans who may have missed it while watching The Mandalorian and Grogu for the first time.
However, it’s not the only callback the latest movie has from past Star Wars projects. There’s also a moment where Luke Skywalker is indirectly mentioned.

In one scene, Din Djarin gets injured and Grogu steps up to care for him. Shortly after, Grogu is seen meditating on a tree trunk, a nod to Luke Skywalker’s training of Grogu in The Book of Boba Fett. Director Favreau recently revealed that this reference was added to the film at the last minute, with the crew shooting two different angles of the scene using leftover time between shots.
Additionally, Favreau mentioned Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu movie also features references to Apocalypse Now, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, My Neighbor Totoro, and Close Encounters of the Third Kind.
Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu is currently playing in theaters. It features Pedro Pascal in the lead role of Din Djarin. Other key cast members include Jeremy Allen White, Sigourney Weaver, Steve Blum, Brendan Wayne, and more.
