Toy Story 6 Chances Gets Another Boost as Part 5 Eyes Huge Box Office Haul

Pixar may not be ready to put away Woody and Buzz just yet. New comments from Andrew Stanton suggest the Toy Story saga could continue beyond part five.

Even though Toy Story 5 has not arrived in theaters yet, the franchise’s co-creator says more stories are possible. The filmmaker believes the series still has plenty of room to grow, especially with Bonnie now carrying the torch from Andy.

Toy Story 6 chances receive a boost as Andrew Stanton sees more stories ahead

Andrew Stanton, who directed Toy Story 5 and helped create the franchise, recently explained that Pixar never treated any installment as a guaranteed ending. According to him, the creative team discovered a long-term storytelling path while making Toy Story 3, when Andy passed his toys to Bonnie. That shift opened the door to future adventures.

Stanton said to ScreenRant that there has always been the possibility of following Bonnie’s life and eventually introducing other children. He explained, “It’s like a series that doesn’t know it’s going to get picked up for the next season.” He also noted that Toy Story 4 “passed the badge on from Woody to Jessie” partly because Pixar wanted to leave options open if the film series continued.

The veteran Pixar filmmaker also revealed to Entertainment Weekly in April that only a couple of months of discussions could generate enough ideas for at least two more movies. “That’s why I feel like it can keep going,” Stanton stated.

Stanton sounds upbeat about the future of the franchise, but he also hinted that Toy Story 5 will probably be his last time directing. The 60-year-old explained that the long production cycles of animated movies have made him want to spend his time differently. That said, he’s not walking away from Pixar entirely. As the studio’s vice president of creative, he might be mentoring the next generation and staying involved behind the scenes.

As for Toy Story 6, that call may come down to the box office. According to Deadline, early numbers are looking pretty strong, with projections suggesting Toy Story 5 could score a $275 million worldwide debut.
