Evil Dead Burn Was Almost Rated NC-17, Here’s Why
The upcoming horror movie Evil Dead Burn was nearly given an NC-17 rating. Its director, Sébastien Vaniček, has now explained the reason why.
Why was Evil Dead Burn almost rated NC-17?
Evil Dead Burn is the next major installment in the iconic and popular horror series. Ahead of its release next month, director Sébastien Vaniček has revealed that his film was almost rated NC-17 for a specific and very violent scene that eventually got cut.
Speaking with GamesRadar+, Vaniček said, “There is a scene that is not R-rated. It’s a really, really hard scene. And I have to cut it, unfortunately, so you just won’t experience it as brutally as it is right now because I need to have the R-rated movie.”
He added, “So we are trying to find a good balance.”

According to the official description of its plot, Evil Dead Burn will unleash a new wave of supernatural carnage. “After the loss of her husband, a woman seeks solace with her in-laws in their secluded family home. As one by one they are transformed into Deadites—turning the gathering into a family reunion from hell—she comes to discover that the vows she took in life live on… even in death.”
As for the upcoming installment, it’s already tracking for a great opening at the box office. Evil Dead Burn is expected to make between $20-$30 million domestically in its first weekend. It’s projected to earn a total of between $45 million and $75 million during its full domestic theatrical run.
It will face an uphill battle of surpassing the last installment in the horror franchise, Evil Dead Rise. The 2023 movie from Lee Cronin was both a critical and commercial success. It received a stellar Tomatometer score of 85% and a phenomenal Popcornmeter score of 95% on Rotten Tomatoes. It also went on to become the highest-grossing Evil Dead movie ever, earning more than $147 million globally against a budget of just $15 million.
Evil Dead Burn will release in theaters on July 10, 2026. The main cast of the film includes Souheila Yacoub, Tandi Wright, Hunter Doohan, Luciane Buchanan, and Erroll Shand.
