3 Oscar Nominations Obsession Could Actually Pull Off in 2027
Obsession is one of the biggest success stories of 2026. The film has garnered critical acclaim and grossed over $286 million worldwide. Now, Focus Features plans to launch an awards campaign for Obsession. While horror typically struggles to break through at the major ceremonies, Obsession could be an outlier. Here are three Oscar nominations that Obsession could actually pull off in 2027.
What Oscar nominations could Obsession get?
Best Original Screenplay
If I had to bet on Obsession’s best chance of receiving an Oscar nomination, it would be in the original screenplay category. While the Academy has historically been tough on horror, there have been some breakthroughs in the original screenplay category over the last 30 years.
M. Night Shyamalan famously received multiple nominations at the 2000 Oscars for The Sixth Sense, including Best Original Screenplay. In 2018, Jordan Peele won in this category for Get Out.
The last two years have featured horror scripts in the Best Original Screenplay category. Coralie Fargeat got a nod for The Substance in 2025 and Ryan Coogler won for Sinners in 2026. Curry Barker certainly has a legitimate chance to find himself in this category in 2027.
Best Actress
The breakout sensation of Obsession is Inde Navarrette. The 25-year-old has received universal acclaim as Nikki Freeman, the woman who falls in love with Bear after he wishes for it. Focus will push Navarrette for lead actress at the various ceremonies.
The Oscars have awarded the Best Actress award to horror stars, including Kathy Bates in Misery, Jodie Foster in The Silence of the Lambs, and Natalie Portman in Black Swan. The most recent nominee for Best Actress in a horror film was Demi Moore for The Substance.
Navarrette’s lack of a relationship with mainstream audiences might hold her back, but her performance is certainly worthy of award recognition.
Best Picture
This is the nomination that Focus Features likely wants the most. Best Picture at the Oscars is the most prestigious award for movies. Considering Obsession was made for less than $1 million, earning a Best Picture nomination would be a tremendous honor.
Blumhouse, the production company behind Obsession, helped Get Out crack the Best Picture category in 2018. Recent horror movies to receive Best Picture nominations include The Substance, Frankenstein, and Sinners. The Oscars are still nine months away, but if Obsession continues its unprecedented run, don’t be surprised if it’s fighting for a Best Picture spot.
