Jason Bourne 6 Can Revive Matt Damon Franchise By Avoiding Legacy’s Mistake & Following 1 Movie Trend

With talks of a Jason Bourne 6, Matt Damon‘s action franchise must avoid the mistakes of The Bourne Legacy by following this movie trend.

Things have been quiet with the Bourne franchise since 2023, when a new film was in development with Edward Burger. However, nothing ever materialized in that movie. In March 2025, Universal Pictures lost the rights to the Bourne franchise. Ultimately, NBCUniversal acquired all the rights to the Jason Bourne and Treadstone book series in August 2025, paving the way for new installments.

While promoting The Odyssey, Damon gave a promising update about Bourne for the first time in years. “We’re always looking to try to get another one of those because we loved it, everyone who worked on them,” Damon said. “So there’s always some attempt going on to write, to come up with a new story. So if you have anything, let us know.”

Damon is clearly interested in finding a way to make Jason Bourne 6. If the movie happens, the Bourne franchise should look to the Creed franchise for inspiration on the next movie.

Why the Creed formula is a great fit for Jason Bourne 6

After six movies, the Rocky franchise needed a creative reset. Enter Ryan Coogler, who decided to craft a new story about Apollo Creed’s son, Adonis Creed, played by Michael B. Jordan. Instead of removing Sylvester Stallone from the movie, Coogler smartly moved Rocky into a supporting role as the mentor to Adonis. Creed is now one of the most beloved movies in the franchise, and Stallone received a supporting actor Oscar nomination.

After five movies, Bourne certainly needs a new storyline. It also needs to get younger. That doesn’t mean Damon must leave the franchise, though. He’s only 55 years old and still an A-list star. Damon should be one of the stars of Jason Bourne 6. However, Jason Bourne 6 should consider pairing Damon with a young star to make it more of a team-up movie instead of a solo adventure.

If the next Bourne movie still wants Damon as the star, Top Gun: Maverick is another formula the producers could follow. Tom Cruise is still the draw for the movie. However, the movie pairs him with a crop of young talent to bring in a new generation of fans.

No matter the formula the movie follows, Damon has to be in the next movie. We’ve already seen what happens when Damon’s Jason Bourne is not in the movie. In 2012, Damon did not appear in The Bourne Legacy. Instead, the film starred Jeremy Renner as Aaron Cross. The film grossed $276 million on a $125 million budget. It’s the second-lowest-grossing film of the franchise behind The Bourne Identity. However, the Bourne Identity was the first film in the franchise and grossed $214 million worldwide on a $60 million budget. The Bourne Legacy also received mixed reviews.

There is a path forward for Jason Bourne 6. However, it must be with Damon in some role.
